I finally finished reading David McCullough's 1000 page biography of Harry Truman. I loved it! I am confident the Lord put Harry Truman in that position for certain reasons. Had I lived in Harry Truman's days I would have been decrying his socialist policies that are not all that different the President Obama's, but I am certain Harry was a far better man than most of our nation's presidents. He thought of government as a tool to help people and pursued policies in that direction. I see government as the necessary evil to protect our God-given rights and nothing much more than that. Reading this book reminded me that I can respect and even love a person even if they don't see things from my perspective.
I am currently doing research and interviews for a history of the land where Avimor is now. I just hope I can imitate McCullough' style of writing. He writes the way I wish all history was written. So in addtion to the books I am report on here I have read three others related to Boise history, especially those related to the folks who lived and worked the foothills over the last century and a half.
Another book I read in one day, yesterday, was Hunger Games. Loved it! The next book comes out in September. Its a futuristic novel, taking place in what once was North America which is now controlled by the people at "The Capital" someplace in the Rocky Mountains. The Capital rules over 12 Districts which are impoverished, yet each specialize in producing something for the benefit of those living in the Capital. To keep the districts in subjection and humilty by humiliation, they have a boy and a girl from each district fight to the death on a live reality TV show which everyone is forced to watch. Its a very engaging book and sucks you right into a different world. I love it when a book, a movie, music, or a piece of art can do that.
While reading Harry Truman I quickly read Glenn Beck's Common Sense in one evening at RC Willey. While many in the media are starting to call Glenn a fanatic, I tend to agree with him on most things, even his presentation style. We need more Glenn Beck's in the world to rally us to the cause of defending the cause of liberty. I sense a movement in our nation of good God-fearing and Constitution-loving people that are starting to stand up and make their voices heard. I don't believe our country is so far off track that we cannot restore it to its fundamental principles by speaking out and voting for the right people. I hope we never get the point of an armed constitutional restoration.
A group from my BYU freshman year has a book club going so I squeezed in The Road during another slow day at RC Willey. You can read my thoughts about it here on the book club blog site. A movie based on this book starring Viggo Mortensen (I wish we were related) comes out soon.
