Please read Ben Stein's take on the Oscars. His sentiments are interesting as he seems to be a Hollywood insider, but I am sure that he has plenty of enemies in Hollywood for statements like this. Actors and actresses are easy targets to bash for their hypocritical lives, but coming from Ben Stein, it seems to mean a little more.

Our soldiers are truly the ones deserving of the awards and the money that Hollywood so regularly bestows upon itself.

I've always liked Ben Stein's droll wit, but I think he's missed the mark on this one. It seems to me the apathy towards the war and the scacrifice of others is pervasive across America. It's not just the entertaiment industry but on the shop floor and most other areas the masses are talking about sports and American Idol, not what happened in Iraq today. It would be nice if we could start paying for the war now instead of passing it off to future gernerations, a weekly deduction on every workers paycheck under the line Iraq, this would get the folks talking. Unfortunatly our leaders thought the effort would be easy, and that Iraq oil revenues would offset costs, and depending upon your social class the American people got a large or small tax cut. No Ben, it's not Hollywood that has missed an opportunity, it's Washington that has plopped us down in the middle of it, and not asked for a single sacrifice from 99.5% percent of Americans.
One point that you touched on really intrigues me...that of the sacrifice of common man for the war. It seems that all the wars in our nations history required sacrifice on the part of the citizens in order to support the war efforts. This engendered a high level of patriotism and support. It also appears that this public and common sacrifice to pay for the war ended with Vietnam or perhaps as early as the Korean War.
I'm all for preventing the government from spending money that isn't in their coffer or in their budget, so it would be interesting to have the war effort become a line item on our check stubs. I'm sure that most of the money being spent on the war is from tax revenues already flowing thru the system (of a course it is a system hemorraging all over the place.)
How would people react to the line item tax for war? Would we become more patriotic and feel it our sense of pride and duty, or would more protests erupt?
